Hinduism,Buddhism and Islam guided many ancient SEA rulers in the way they governed. For example, in mainland SEA, Khmer kings became Hindu divine kings and had their people construct capital cities in which their palaces represented the home of the gods. Meanwhile, rulers of island SEA adopted Islam and called themselves sultans. Their kingdoms were called sultanates.
In ancient China, the people of ancient SEA did not entirely follow the teachings of their new religions and abandon their older beliefs. Instead, they combined their older beliefs with the teachings of their new religions. Example, rulers of maritime SEA kingdoms no longer saw themselves as gods but the continued to use emblems of kingship, which were usually used by divine Hindu kings although they had converted to Islam.
Today, these religions continue to shape the lives of people in SEA. Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia consist more Muslims while Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar consist more Buddhists.
How did Hinduism spread to SEA?
Hindu priests from India were invited to the courts of ancient SEA rulers to teach Indian culture. This was because India was one of the most advanced civilisations soSEA kings wanted to learn from the Indians. This is how Hinduism spread to SEA.
How did Buddhism spread to SEA?
Buddhism was spread by Indian and Chinese traders as well as the Buddhist missionaries who travelled with them.
